The 11th Winner

Parkgeonhi Foundation was established in 2001 as a nonprofit art foundation, in accordance with the passion of the late Park Geonhi for culture and art. Park, whose university major was photography, received attention as a prominent artist with a promising future. He co-founded Daum Communications Corporation in 1995, and became the first person in Korea to operate a Virtual Gallery and to broadcast the Gwangju Biennale live on the Internet, thereby promoting culture and art not only in Korea but worldwide.
Due to his unfortunate early death at the age of 29, Park Geonhi is no longer with us; but his passionate, challenging, creative mind is passed down to us through the projects of the Parkgeonhi Foundation.

The Daum Prize was established in 2002 as a program to support the creative work of young artists. The program is open to artists who are age 40 or younger, have Korean citizenship, and work with photographic media. Project proposals for new works and portfolios of previous works are evaluated to select one winner. The chosen artist must present his/her works according to the project proposal in an exhibition and a book of works during the following year. For the past 12 years, the Daum Prize has been established as the gateway for young Korean artists, exhibiting the representative trend and flow of the nextgeneration Korean photography.

Artist Heeseung Chung submitted the Reading and Still Life series to win the 11th Daum Prize.
The artist says she has been interested in things that are not easily revealed on the surface of objects, latent situations, and beings hidden in the background. Such perspective enabled the artist to bring out contemplation on the photographic surface and what is not visualized in one’s eyes in the series Reading (2009–2010), which consists of photographs taken of actors reading scripts, and Still Life (2009–2012), which are photographs of objects used in everyday life. In the work program that he submitted, he suggested a profound idea on how to proceed the two projects, showing the potential to continuously develop his work.
